Read One Program

In 2011, Kirk began the Read One program in an effort to promote literacy in conjunction with the Brumback Library in Van Wert County.

With October serving as National Book Month, he challenged the local community to read at least one book during the month and then to send the name and title to the Times Bulletin in Van Wert so it could be printed in the newspaper. He enlisted the help of the Brumback Library and they supplied the titles of the most read books leading up to the start of the event in several different categories.

The first year a total of 49 different titles were turned in as a part of the Read One program. In 2012, the number jumped to 114. Just as gratifying was the reaction of Brumback Library director John Carr who stated the books making the list were checked out at a much higher rate after it was published in November.

The program has continued to grow and reach out in more areas. In 2013, a total of eight newspapers and library systems agreed to become a part of the Read One program in northwest Ohio and northeast Indiana. In 2014, two local schools agreed to include the Read One program as a part of their structured reading programs. As an incentive, two winners in each class were presented with free books at the end of the month, helping to achieve one of the program’s goals by reaching children with the importance of literacy.

If you would like to become involved or would like your local library to take part, please email Kirk through the Contact page on this website.

Here is the final report that appeared in the Times Bulletin on the 2014 Read One program:

Read One Program tops 500 titles in 2014

VAN WERT -The end of October also brought the end of the Read One Program for 2014 and organizers said this year’s program was by far the largest in the history of the project.

“We have been overwhelmed by the growth in the Read One Program the past two years,” said Kirk Dougal, DHI Media Group Publisher. “Last year we expanded into several of the surrounding counties and this year the Brumback Library graciously allowed us to collect titles and authors at the main branch which really increased the awareness of the program. Also, classes at Van Wert and Crestview participated in helping spread the word about reading. That has always been our goal, trying to stress the importance of literacy by reaching as many people as possible.”

The Read One Program began in Van Wert in 2011 as a way of promoting October as National Book Month and encouraging literacy in the area. The Brumback Library helps locally by publishing lists of the top read books in several categories before October begins and again at the midpoint. In 2011, area residents turned in a total of 49 different book titles read during the event. That number jumped to 114 in 2012 and then 130 separate titles in 2013. Dougal reported that in 2014, the Read One Program participants completed a massive leap forward by compiling a total of 652 books encompassing 516 different titles.

There was no overwhelming title in 2014 like there had been the past few years with books such as the 50 Shades series. However, many familiar author names like James Patterson, Debbie Macomber, and Ken Follett were listed several times on different titles. Also, the number of Middle Grade (MG) and Young Adult (YA) books continued to grow and were dominated by James Dashner’s Maze Runner series, Rick Riordan and his Percy Jackson universe, and Veronica Roth’s Divergent entries. No list of books would be complete without mentioning John Green and his YA titles as well.

Dougal pointed out two students from each of the participating classes at Van Wert and Crestview will be receiving books as a reward for their reading efforts. He hoped that in 2015 the Read One Program will have the opportunity to expand the efforts to put books in the hands of the students as a way of helping to spread the message that literacy is vital to a fulfilling life.

“The importance of literacy to a happy, productive life cannot be overstated,” Dougal said. “An active reading life in children and adults correlates to higher incomes and fewer societal problems. Whether someone is buying a physical book, reading an e-book on their Kindle or Nook, or taking advantage of community assets like the Brumback Library, we hope reading will not just be looked upon as a one-month proposition but will continue to be an activity in the community all year long. This list was built by friends and neighbors in the Van Wert community and we encourage everyone to take the time to look it over. Our goal would be for everyone to find a new author or a new favorite book in these titles.”
